Offering a Home

Do you want to offer one of our Labradors a Furever Home?
This is the process we follow ..........

Things to Consider

We have lots of Labradors coming into rescue and we always try to match a home with them before they arrive. We never know from day to day when the phone may ring or an email pops into the inbox and yet another Labrador is looking for a new home , so please do register your interest on our home page.

The first thing we ask you to consider when looking to re-home a Labrador is your own circumstances. Have you enough time at home to spend with the Labrador. Will the dog get on with existing family animals and are all family members are agreeable to having a new furry addition. Some people assume dogs in rescue are there because of behavioural problems – this is a misconception, rescue doesn't mean damaged! There may be problems to overcome in the first month or so until your new family member settles. Although a dog may have had the same owner for 5 years or more, some are still not house trained, can be destructive with chewing, may be food aggressive, may not know how to walk on a lead or travel well or may not be in good health. Most things can be overcome with patience and training and if you are looking to re-home a rescue animal you are probably sensitive enough to take this on board.

Homecheck

Once you have decided on offering a furever home, we will carry out a homecheck or risk assessment.  This is for the benefit of the Labrador – we are not interested in how many times a day you vacuum or polish, we are looking for a perfect match for the Labrador we are rehoming, this includes a secure garden, age of children, suitable property, experience of Labradors, how long the animal may be left (if you work) and where and what arrangements will be made if it is to be over a certain length of time. We always follow up after rehoming at a later date and if needed might just call in if we are passing. In some circumstances, we may also request a vet’s reference. We reserve the right to refuse to re-home any of our Labradors without giving a reason. We are however always available to give back up to the animals we have homed. If we feel that the home is not suitable after rehoming, we reserve the right to remove the Labrador from the home.

We are one of the smallest Labrador specific independent Charity and we do as much as we possibly can for the Labradors in our care.

Taking your Labrador Home

Once the home check (risk assessment) is approved and both parties are happy, the adoption paperwork can then go ahead.  There will be a donation for adoption, this is on a sliding scale dependent on the age of the Labrador. We ask for an adoption fee in order to continue the work for homeless, abused or neglected Labradors. We are not a profit making charity.  Most of the Labradors that come into our care need medical attention one way or another. As part of our adoption agreement, we ask that every Labrador is neutered or spayed when the time is right, depending on age and season. This is to support the overbreeding, and responsible breeding of Labradors in general.

We always ask any new furever home to ensure that the Labrador is given time to settle.  Keep the house quiet and calm, we recommend no visitors for the first couple of weeks and in some cases not to go for walks until they are ready to trust you.  Let the Labrador come to you when they are ready.  Please always follow our advice and guidance.  We are always on call to help if you have a question and always recommend any new home joins our Facebook Owners Group - Labrador UK Owners Group for support from over 6k Labrador owners who are also, breeders, veterinary and behavioural specialists.
